Olfactory

Sense of smell

Wave something below nose, see if baby startles, moves, etc

Cranial nerve II

-Name

-What it does

-How to test

Optic

Visual acuity, fixation on an object & follow, optic blink reflex

Shine light in eyes. No blink? Blind. They will also not fix and follow and object if blind

Cranial nerve III

-Name

-What it does

-How to test

Oculomotor

Enables eye movements; specifically CONSTRICTS PUPILS. Related to MUSCLE MOVEMENT, NOT vision

Shade eyes and then remove hand. Can baby follow you?

Cranial nerve IV

-Name

-What it does

-How to test

Trochlear

Enables eye movements

Can they follow you? Doll's eyes maneuver (do the eyes MOVE)

Cranial nerve V

-Name

-What it does

-How to test

Trigeminal

3 branches: Opthalmic (corneal blink reflex, glabella tap), Maxillary (rooting reflex), Mandibular (biting portion of suck, supplies jaw muscles)

Sensory - corneal blink reflex, rooting reflex, glabella tap

Motor - biting, jaw muscles

Cranial nerve VI

-Name

-What it does

-How to test

Abducens

Enables eye movement

Can they follow you? Doll's eyes maneuver (do the eyes MOVE)

Cranial nerve VI

-Name

-What it does

-How to test

Facial

Controls facial expression, facial symmetry, brow wrinkling, eye blinking (blink in response to light = II & VII intact, blink in response to glabella = V & VII intact), closing mouth around nipple

Test with blinking, watch face while crying, assess ability to eat

Asymmetric crying facies - absence of what muscle

Absence of depressor anguli oris muscle (different from facial nerve palsy where part of facial nerve is damaged)

Cranial nerve VIII

-Name

-What it does

-How to test

Vestibulocochlear

Auditory/acoustic

Response to loud noise (startle/blink), responds to voice (head turning), doll's eyes (vestibular branch -- deals with balance)

Cranial nerve IX

-Name

-What it does

-How to test

Glossopharyngeal

Tongue movement, position of uvula, gag reflex

Cranial nerve X

-Name

-What it does

-How to test

Vagus

Supplies palate, pharynx, larynx (CRY), swallowing, gag

Listen to cry for hoarseness, stridor, aphonia

Cranial nerve XI

-Name

-What it does

-How to test

Accessory

Controls sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles, head turning from side to side, shoulder height

Look at neck and ROM

Cranial nerve XII

-Name

-What it does

-How to test

Hypoglossal

Muscles of tongue, gag reflex

Check movement of tongue, suck, swallow

If an infant can feed well, which CN are intact?

V (Trigeminal), VII (Facial), IX (Glossopharyngeal), X (Vagus), XII (Hypoglossal)
