MMPI basics
1943; originally to identify psychopathology quickly and treat patients in hospital
II= nondiagnostic activities and emotion disorders

most widely used personality instrument

empirical criterion keyed instrument
Traditionally, MMPI was.....
content related procedures

problems: missing symptoms, no 1 item could tap into depression, clients could fake/exaggerate, it was directly asking people if they have particular trait
Empirical Keying Method/ Norming Sample/ Criticism
dev't, selection and scoring of items based on external criterion of reference
(items- not clear what exactly each is related to so hard to fake)

ie "i sometimes tease animals".

items could differentiate between depressed and nondepressed groups

problems with norming sample= friends/relatives of patients at hospital so poor representation of minorites; problem with language (sexist wording, possible racial bias), mostly caucasians with ed of 8 years/ housewives and blue collar workers

so....restandardization of MMPI in 1982
MMPI 2
Matched demographics of 1980 consensus

separate norms for men and women b/c gender differences on certain scales with women scoring higher (depression, hysteria, psychasthenia, social introversion)

Components:
-Validity scales
-Basic Clinical scales
-Content related scales
-Supplementary scales
Basic Clinical Scales characteristics
=focus of assessment report
not interpreted individually but using 2 or 3 point codes; above 65 is elevated and clinically significant/ 60-65 is moderately elevated
Basic Clinical Scales
1 Hypochondriasis
2 Depression
3 Hysteria
4 Psychopathic Deviate
5 Masculinity- Femininity
6 Paranoia
7 Psychasthenia
8 Schizophrenia
9 Hypomania
0 Social Introversion

Mas-Fem not technically clinical scale but gives sense to help interpret other scales

Social Introversion not traditionally clinical scale but provides tone to other scales
Hypochondriasis
1, Hs

high: somatic complaints
moderate: vague, nonspecific somatic complaints but preoccupied with health problems, physical symptoms in response to stress

personality: selfish, self centered, narcissistic, outlook toward like tends to be pessimistic, defeatist and cynical; complain a great deal
Schizophrenia
8, Sz
not all high scores can be diagnosed as having schizophrenia

high: unusual beliefs, feeling alienated from others, difficulty in train of thought and mental processes
MC issues: Af-Am score higher; age adol score higher

Harris Lingoes Scales to determine what may be of concern (for several scales)
Validity Scales
? Cannot say (did not give response; if too many skipped= invalid profile, typically is 0-6 omitted)

VRIN Variable Response Inconsistency Scale (to determine if randomly marked items or had difficulty understanding items; ie, pairs- if answer yes on 1, would expect yes on other but if no, 1 point on VRIN; if too high indicates something is wrong)

TRIN True Response Inconsistency (how much they are payig attention; "yea-saying" or "nay-saying"; if marked all items true or all false)

F Infrequency (faking/exaggerating; if high can represent degree their thoughts are diff from general population)

Fb Infrequency Back (measures items infrequently endorsed by general population; can verify score on F)

L Lie (if trying to look good, higher means want to report socially correct answers)

K Correction (measure defensiveness or guardedness, more subtle than L)
Faking bad
F scale
consistency with responses? VRIN and TRIN
Faking good
L,K elevated
F average to below average
Harris-Lingoes Subscales
further information for scales that are elevated in basic clinical scales

2 (depression), 3 (hysteria), 4 (psychopathic deviate), 6 (paranoia), 8 (schizophrenia), 9 (hypomania), 0 (social introversion) `
Content scales
groups of items statistically related to each other and represent some problem in a number of specific content areas

look at actual content of individual items
ie, anger, social discomfort, negative treatment indicators, family problems
Critical Items
Used to guide further interviewing
Face-valid items-- accuracy?
Supplementary Scales
MacAndrew Alcoholism Scales

College Maladjustment

PTSD

Martial Distress

Addiction Potential Scale
