Common Maintenance Rate for Lactated Ringers Solution or Isotonic saline

10-20 ml/kg/hr

Rate for Lactated Ringers Solution/Isotonic Saline for procedures involve opening a major body cavity

20-30 ml/kg/hr this will help with dehydration while organs are exposed

Lactated Ringers Solution (LRS)

  • Closely approximates electrolyte concentrations of extracellular fluid
  • isotonic so that it does not induce fluid shifts
  • Since itis isotonic it will not replacelost fluid on a 1:1 basis, will “replace” bloodon a3:1 basis
  • Othersolutions such as TisUSol are closer to elctrolytic normals

Isotonic(0.9%) and hypotonic (0.45%)saline

  • Do not meetfree water and electrolyte needs
  • May leadto dilution of extracellular electrolytes and bufferswith excessive use

Hypotonic saline withdextrose (2.5%)

act as an isotonic solution

Hypertonic (35%)saline

  • Promotes rapidsodium replenishment (hyponatremia)
  • Usefulin management of shock(esp. hemorrhagic)
  • 46 mL/kg 7.5%
  • Should be given IV

Dextrose(2.550%) solutions

  • Provide source offree water for dehydrationtreatment
  • Not effectiveas plasma expanders
  • May be used as a caloricsupplement

Sodium bicarbonate

  • Treatsmetabolic acidosis
  • Producessodium retention
