Topstitching
decorative machine stitching executed on the right side of the garment
Thread
the long, string like product made up of tightly twisted fibers and is held on a spool for the purpose of sewing component parts of a garment together.
Tension
the pressure applied to thread as it moves thru the loops and guides of the sewing machine and bobbin case during sewing
Stitch Length
number of stitches made per inch, known as spi
Selvage
the narrow, finished edge along both lengthwise edges of all woven fabric.
Seam Line
the stitching line inside the cutting line. standard seam line = 5/8 inch from cut line/raw edge

Seam
the basic structural element of all garments, formed by joining 2 or more layers of fabrics together with a machine or hand stitch.
Raw Edge
any unfinished edge
Back Stitch
sewing back and forth for 3 or 4 stitches on the same line to prevent raveling of stitches.
Bias

Bobbin
small spool of plastic around which the lower thread of the sewing machine is wound
Bolt
a long, flat cardboard piece that has fabric wrapped around it. generally 20-25 yards of fabric
Casing
a closed tunnel of fabric that encases elastic or a drawstring.
Clean Finish
a folding and sewing technique of enclosing a raw edge of fabric so it is not exposed and ravels
Edge Stitch
line of topstitching placed close to any folded edge or seam line.
Fabric
flat piece of cloth
Grain
direction in which the yarns run
Crosswise grain
yarns run from selvage to selvage edge
Lengthwise grain
yarns parallel to selvage edges (aka straight grain or grainline)
Grainline
warp yarn direction of the fabric
Grainline markings
arrow marked on pattern which indicates how to lay the pattern on the fabric
Iron
a gliding motion on fabric with a heated iron
Nap
soft surface in which fiber ends are brushed up onto the top of the fabric
Pattern
a drawing on paper of the component parts of a garment
Pinking
cutting off a part of the seam allowance edge to prevent raveling; using special shears known as pinking shears
Press
a lifting and setting down with pressure motion of heated iron on fabric
Presser Foot
a part of the sewing machine that holds the fabric in place to help it move through the machine evenly
