Li
|
Confucian, meaning ritual. Norms of proper social behavior as taught to others by fathers, village elders and government officials. The teachings of li promote ideals such as filial piety, brotherliness, righteousness, good faith and loyalty.

Confucious
|
5th century bce sage. Recovering esoteric message, doctorine of self cultivation, and rectification of names.

Tao
|
Ancient principal in Chinese thought (w/i us). Confucianism regards the Way, or Truth, as concordant with a particular approach to life, politics, and tradition. It is held as equally necessary and well regarded as De (virtue) and ren (humanity).

Junzi
|
Sage is the ideal personality, however, it is very hard to become and so Confucius created the junzi, gentleman, which can be achieved by an individual. Ren is the core of becoming the junzi.

Xunzi
|
Disciple of Confucius. Represents one of the two main branches. Xunzi believed man's inborn tendencies need to be curbed through education and ritual, counter to Mencius's view that man is innately good.

Agape
|
One of three of the Greek terms for love. Centered in the will for the sake of others. Patient, rational and active.

Hsin
|
Derives from the Dewey Ming dynasty. Confucian work for heart/mind.

Mencius
|
Disciple of Confucius, represented one of the two main branches. Author of the 4 hearts, thought man was naturally good

Eros
|
Erotic- rooted in feeling for my sake. Impatient, a demention of irrationality, passive. Seeks its completion. IE, Look for she who completes me.

I-Ching
|
Source is the first of the 5 Chinese classics, both book of wisdom and oracle. Read simply as for wisdom, divine revelation. Since divine revelation, considered an oracle to communicate with the heavens.

Rec. of Names
|
From Confucius, an attempt to return to the essence of things. Conf says, 'we've lost the nature of things'. Symbols not lables, reveal source of things. Charaterized the diff. btwn. label, symbol and signs.

Mandate of Heaven
|
From Zhou dynasty, ruler enjoys the favor of the gods. Chinese equiv. of legit of the ruler. Must be moral ruler, perform with proper attitude in order to humbly submit so that self-cultivation is brought to the forefront.

4 hearts
|
From Mencius, compassion, disdain, deference, and discernment. There are 2 ways to go wrong, environment, lack of motivation and lack of proper cultivation.

The Analects
|
A collection of Confucius' thoughts and saying. Written by his followers, includes concepts of ren, humaness, benevolence, and the superior person. It is considered the most basic Chinese text.

5 relation
|
From popular piety, and according to Confucius, each person had a specific place in society and certain duties to fulfill. King to sub, parent to child, husb. to wife, sibling to sibling, friend to friend.

Mozi
|
Early rival of Confucian thought and tradition. Military type mentality, being part of a greater whole. Beleived we are defined by our desires, universal core, downplayed invidivual, morality is utility and King must earn blessing from gods.

Scientific Approach
|
One of the approaches to the study of religion. Aka as outsider, opposite of inside aka confessional. Looks into two areas, projectionist such as sociology, psycology, anthro, and Marx. Other area is the Phenomenologist, study of historical change and evol. of beliefs.

Exoteric
|
From the pluralist approach to the study of religion. Each pf the world's religons are true but point to a hierarchy.

Legalism
|
From the Han Feizi, Human nature is bad and has selfish inclination. Li and Yi-invented by king, subject to change by King. No real self-cultivation, represes bad nature. State-King rulers by power. Since king invented li, he is good. Words-invented, utiliatrian.
