Asepsis

Absence of pathogenic microorganisms that cause infection

Microorganism (microbe)

Microscopic living organism

Pathogen

Infectious agent that causes disease or illness

Disinfectant

Destroy vegetative forms of bacteria but not the spores by antimicrobial agents. Used on objects and surfaces.

Antiseptic

Chemical that inhibits or prevents growth of microbes on living tissue

Sterilization

Destruction of all organisms and spores on an object

Fomite

Inanimate object that carries a pathogen or allows transmission of pathogen

Nosocomial infection

Infections that are acquired in a health care environment

Three common microorganisms eliminated by disinfection and/or sterilization

Bacteria and fungi and viruses

Disinfectants used for

Surfaces and objects

Antiseptics used for

Skin and living tissues

Two common disinfectants

Bleach, Lysol, chlorhexidine solution

Three common antiseptics

Autoclave, ethylene oxide (a gas chemical) chlorhexidine liquid is a form of cold sterilization

What describes most disinfectants and is addressed in the sanitation step?

Rinsing well?

Three common tools or methods of sterilization

Radiation, filtration, disinfectants or antiseptics

Autoclaves utilize what to achieve sterilization

Heat and time and pressure

What two materials will ethylene oxide penetrate?

Plastic and heat intolerant items?

How much exposure time does ethylene oxide require at room temperature to achieve sterilization?

24 to 48 hours

Steps for proper maintenance of surgical instruments?

?

Purposes of using instrument milk

It lubricates and inhibits that's and extends life of instrument

What should be checked on packs to ensure they are still sterile before use

Date because packs only maintain sterility for a certain amount of time

How should linens be cleaned and what if they're stained with blood?

Blood stained is washed in cold water. Wash regular laundry of bedding and towels separately from surgical laundry and wash and dry in small loads, less washer detergent and extra rinse cycle, lint roll after dryer

How often are surgical suites cleaned

Once a week

What's most important factor with cold sterilization?

Soaking instruments for long enough contact time, more than three hours

Autoclave steps

Check water level, check seal and make sure it is not cracked, dry, or warped. Set time to 250 at 15 PSI for 45 to 50 minutes. Packs can't be touching walls or top. Use distilled water. Then dial to fill and then after watching water fill enough, close door and turn to sterilize and set timer.
