Hull

A boats shell

Rudder

Underwater flap to steer the boat. Adjusted by the helm-pivots on the rudder postwinch

Winch

A geared drum used to pull lines

Deck

The lid on a hull

Standing rigging

Supports the mast


Lines, wires or rods which are in a fixed position opposed to running rigging, which change often during sailing

Cleat

Object to which lines under strain are secured. Two kinds: horn and quick-action

Transom

Back of the hull -surface that forms the stern

Shroud

A side stay-holds up mast and is part of standing rigging. There is an upper and lower shroud attached to the spreaders.

Fender

rubber bumper hung between the boat and a float or pier

Keel

Appendage or fin on the boat bottom that provides deep ballast and lateral area

Spreader

A strut holding shrouds out from the mast and providing lateral support


Docklines

Line securing boat to a float or pier

Mast

Upright sail post - pole supported by standing rigging from which the sails are set

Chainplate

A strap on the Hull to which stays are secured

Block

A pulley on a boat

Boom

Horizontal Spar (pole) that extends from the mast and supports the foot of a sail


Headstay/Forestay

The stay running from the bow to the mast

Fairlead

A fitting through which a line passes to change angle/direction of the line and so chafe is avoided

Gooseneck

The connector securing forward end of the boom to the mast

Backstay

Stay from the back of the boat to the Mast - can be permanent (standing) or adjustable (running)

Cockpit

Recessed area in the deck containing the tiller or wheel

Bow

Most forward part of the boat


Stanchion

Vertical metal post for the lifeline

Cabin

A room in a boat

Stern

Aftmost part of the hull

Lifeline

Coated wire above the deck that restrains the crew


Helm, Tiller, Wheel

a tiller or wheel and any associated equipment for steering a ship or boat

Pulpit

Stainless steel guardrail around the bow or stern
