Protocol layering

when a packet is sent over the network it uses more than one protocol. Each protocol is responsible for a different aspect of communication

IP layer

internet layer - it uses routing, by using IP addresses for getting packets to their destinations

TCP

orders packets using sequence numbers, buffers them and then adds error detection and recovery

UDP

has no error recovery, and does not guarantee packets will arrive on time, however it is faster than the alternative of TCP
