List the tests included in a blood gas panel
answer
List which test results are measured and which are calculated
reported as: pH/PaCO2/PaO2/[HCO3-], also includes H2CO3, total CO2, O2Sat, Base excess, A-a gradient

directly measured values: pH, PaCO2, PaO2

calculated values: [HCO3-], [H2CO3], Total CO2, base excess, A-a gradient
Discuss how specimen collection and transport can affect values
- it is imp to note the body temp if abnormal and the FiO2 for accurate calculation and measurement values
- it is important to remove bubbles from sample to prevent O2 dissolution in transport
- sample must be labeled and taken within 15 minutes
- place sample on ice to prevent cellular respiration
Explain what an O2 sat is and the different clinical uses of cooximetry vs. pulse oximetry
- O2 sat refers to the percentage of Hg in the blood that is completely saturated with O2

- cooximetry is a technique that should be used to get a baseline level to evaluate the different levels of dyshemoglobins int eh patient's blood, then followed by pulseox. it is invasive (requires arterial blood), gold standard measurement, and accounts for different bound forms of Hb: oxyhemoglobin, deoxyhemoglobin, carboxyhemoglobin, methemoglobin, and sulfhemoglobin

- pulse oximetry is used to monitor the O2 sat of a patient continuously over time. It is noninvasive, cheap and easy, but less able to distinguish between bound forms of Hb --> can give inaccurate readings in presence of dyshemoglobins, such as COHb in CO poisoning
