Compare & Contrast: A Bar at the Folies-Bergere |
Avaunt Garde- Military term. Unique, original, brand-new, trend setting. Both paintings are trying to show how the world really is. The fleneuor is the newest emerging culture class. "They see the world how it is." Money is the structure of the world. The flowers in her brest, the choker, the oranges show that shes the working class. She goes to work everyday because she's a prostitute instead of the flaneur. She is something to be bought and sold; surrounded by boose. Unsure where he stands politically. Nothing is ever how it seems, the reflections are not exact. |

Compare & Contrast: Funeral at Ornans |
They both show distinctions of class The women are grouped together, the clergy. His family is identifiable. black, heavy dreary landscape. Im speaking for the peasants, "the peasants deserve to be represented in historical representation. Showing the suffering going on in the lower class. Courbet shows how he stands politically. Social realism, miserable. the church is a political force, the painting isn't about God or religion. Both paintings are very flat. Really no symbolism in Courbet's work. Very realistic, straight forward. |
