Diagram for Drawing Pencils

What do the H pencils mean?

The H on graphite pencils simply means hard. H pencils, because they are hard, leave less graphite on the paper, so are lighter. H pencils are used for when you want lighter lines/shading.

What do the B pencils mean?

The B on graphite pencils simply mean black. B pencils are softer, so leave more graphite on the paper, and so are darker. B pencils are used for when you want darker lines/ shading.

What is shape?

An element of art that is two-dimensional,flat, or limited to height and width.

Name two Kinds of shapes:

Geometric shapes - man-made shapes, rectangles, triangles, etc.)

Organic shapes - natural and biomorphic forms

What does form mean?

An element of art that is three-dimensional (height, width, and depth) and encloses volume

Name four kinds of form:

1.) Cube

2.) Sphere

3.) Cone

4.) Cylinders

What is the difference between form and shape?

Shape refers to the two dimensional artworks like paintings. Form refers to three dimensional artworks like sculptures.

Define Line:

Path created by a point. It is one-dimensional and can vary in width, direction, and length. Lines often define the edges of a form. Lines can be horizontal, vertical, or diagonal, straight or curved, thick or thin.

Define Line Variation:

Instead of a mechanical looking line, a line with variation will go from think to thick, and/or light to dark.

What is a blind Contour Drawing? What is the process?

A drawing exercise, where an artist draws the contour of a subject without looking at the paper.

What is the purpose for drawing upside down?

Learn to see lines in relationship to each other, rather than as preconceived shapes

List the 5 basic things to look for when drawing upside down?

1.) Shapes

2.) Lines

3.) Distance

4.) Depth

5.) Detail

What does value mean?

The relative lightness or darkness of a color. It also defines form and creates spatial illusions.Contrast of value separates objects in space .

What are the four different kinds of value shading?

1.) Hatching: A row of lines, all facing in the same direction. More dense and concentrated in the areas that appear darker.

2.) Cross-Hatching: Similar to hatching, except with the addition of criss-crossing lines.

3.) Scumbling: Tiny, squiggly circular lines - sort of like "controlled scribbling

4.) Contour-Hatching: Follows the contour, or curve or outline, of the object. In this case, the hatching is rounded to match the shape of the circle.
