Evidence that Certainty is a Condition of the Kalimah
"Is there a doubt about Allah"
(Ibrahim 14:10)

Hadith: Whoever said Laa Ilaaha Illa Allah with certainty

“the (true) believers are those only who believe in Allaah and His messenger and afterward doubt not...”
(al-Hujuraat : 15)
Evidence that Submission is a Condition of the Kalimah

“Turn to your Lord repentant and submit to Him” (al-Zumar 39:54)

“Worship Allaah, making religion pure for him” (al-Zumar : 2)
Evidence that Love is a Condition for the Kalimah

-“Yet of mankind are some who take unto themselves (objects of worship which they set as) rivals to Allaah, loving them with a love like (that which is due to) Allaah only. However, those who believe are stauncher in their love of Allaah”

(al-Baqara : 165).
Evidence that Shirk Is Greatest Sin

"Verily Allah does not forgive the sin of Shirk but forgives other than that for whom he wishes" (An-Nisaa 4:48, 4:116)
Characteristics of Islamic Aqeedah

2. Actions and Intention (at-talab wal qasd)
Division of Tawheed into 3 categories
1. Ruboobiyyaah
2. Uloohiyyah
3. Asma wa Sifaat
Evidence for Tawheed Ar-Ruboobiyyah
-"[All] praise is [due] to Allah , Lord of the worlds" (1:2)

-"Lord of the Heavens and the Earth and whatever is between them, so worship Him and have patience for His Worship. Do you know of any similarity to Him?" (19:65)
Evidence for Tawheed Al-Uloohiyyah
-"It is You we worship and You we ask for help. "(1:5)

-"Lord of the Heavens and the Earth and whatever is between them, so worship Him and have patience for His Worship. Do you know of any similarity to Him?" (19:65)
Evidence for Tawheed Al-Asmaa Wa Sifaat
-"The Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful"(1:3)

-"Lord of the Heavens and the Earth and whatever is between them, so worship Him and have patience for His Worship. Do you know of any similarity to Him?" (19:65)
Distinctive Characteristics of Aqeedah Books by Ahlus-Sunnah
1. Based on Qur'an and Sunnah
1a. Because of this: little differing => same sources and same methodology
2. Books outside of Ahl-us-Sunnah have limited reference to Qur'an & Sunnah
Major Types of Aqeedah Writings
1. General writings: includes all chapters of Aqeedah
2. Specific writings about one topic
3. Rudud: Refutations
4. The writings of the scholars of Hadith (collecting hadeeth and putting in one chapter)
Division of Shirk Into 6 Categories
1) Independence
2) Splitting
3) Means
4) Imitation
5) Reasons
6) Purposes

RIPSMI
Types of Shirk Mentioned in the Quran
LAMPS

1) (Lesser gods)
2) (Atheism)
3) (Mediators)
4) (Partnership)
5) (Self Worship)
Types of Shirk Mentioned in Surah Saba (34)
○ Say, [O Muhammad], "Invoke those you claim [as deities] besides Allah ." They do not possess an atom's weight [of ability] in the heavens or on the earth, and they do not have therein any partnership [with Him], nor is there for Him from among them any assistant. And intercession does not benefit with Him except for one whom He permits. (34:22-23)

Shirk of:

1) Possession
2) Sharing
3) Help
4) Intercession
When did Shirk Start
10 centuries after Adam

"People used to be on Tawheed for 10 centuries until shirk started so Allah sent to them Nuh" (ibn Abbas)
How did shirk start
The ones worshipped were righteous people; when they died, shaytan told the people to make statues to remind them to be righteous. when that generation died, shaytan told the next generation that their ancestors used to worship them.
Ruling on Tamaa'em
Minor Shirk: The person legislated a cause that Allah did not
Conditions under which Tamaa'em become major shirk
"[the person] believes that it is not a cause but it actually brings about the effects itself (i.e. it has powers)…this is because the person has given the control of matters in this existence to things along with Allah"
Evidence regarding Tamaa'em
"Remove it for verily it will not increase you except in weakness..."
(Hadith from Imraan b. Husayn)

"Whoever hangs a charm, may Allah not fulfill for him…"

(Hadith from Uqbah b. Amr in Ahmad) another narration

"Whoever hangs a charm has committed Shirk"
Ruling on Ruqya
Permissible unless it contains shirk
Evidence for the Ruling on Ruqya
Hadith: "There is nothing wrong with Ar-Ruqaa as long as it is not shirk"
Definition of Ruqya
something that is recited with the intention of protection or cure
Definition of Tameemah
a) what is hung on the person b) for protection
Two important parts of the slaughtering
1) The seeking of help and blessings (through mentioning a name)
2) The intent to draw closer to something
The four variants of slaughtering and their ruling
Case 1: Allah's help is sought (name mentioned)
and the intent is to draw closer to Him
- This is tawheed and worship
- If nothing is intended: permissible

Case 2: Allah's help is sought (name mentioned) but the intent to draw closer is for other than Allah
- Major Shirk

Case 3: The help of other than Allah is sought (name mentioned)
and the person intends to draw close to other than Allah
- Major shirk

Case 4: Mentions a name other than Allah's and
intends to draw close to Allah
- Not permitted

In Sum: Major Shirk to intend to draw close to other than Allah with slaughter. Impermissible to mention other than Allah's name
Evidence for the Ruling on Slaughtering for Other Than Allah
- Evidence: Hadith narr by Ali: "Allah curses whoever slaughters for other than Allah…"
- Evidence: Hadith narr. By Taariq ibn Shihaab in Musnad Ahmad: "A man entered Paradise because of a fly and a man entered the Fire because of a Fly…They said to him, 'Make an offering[to the idol], even if it is a fly' So he offered a fly and they let him go. Thus, he entered the Fire…."
Ruling on slaughtering where sacrifices are made to other than Allah
Impermissible b/c it involves resemblance to Mushrikeen
Evidence for Ruling on slaughtering where sacrifices are made to other than Allah
"Do not ever stand in it…"(9:108) -> referring to the masjid built by the munafiqoon

Hadith narr. By Thaabit ibn Adh-Dahhaak "A man vowed to slaughter a camel at a place called Buwaanah, so he asked the Prophet about it…" (Abu Dawud)
Ruling on seeking blessings from tree, stone, grave, etc.
- Major shirk if the person believes it will be a means of intercession for him with Allah or his heart is attached to that thing - this is the same claim of the people of Jaahiliyyah (39:3)

- Minor shirk if the person believes they will become blessed by transferrance from a thing that is blessed - because this involves beleiving in a means that is not legislated
Evidence for the Ruling on seeking blessings from a tree, stone, grave, etc
Hadith in Tirmidhee on auth of Abu Waaqid Al-Laythee "We went out with Allah's Messenger to Hunayn and we had just recently left disbelief. The Mushrikun had a lote tree, which they ysed to frequent for devotion and hang their weapons upon, and it was called Thaatu Anwaat. So we passed by a lote tree and said, 'O Allah's messenger Make a Thaatu Anwaat for us just like their Thaatu Anwaat. Allah Messenger replied, Allahu Akbar~ Verily it is the ways (of earlier nations). By He in Whose Hand is my soul, you all have said the same as the Children of Israa'eel said to Musa, 'Make for use a god just like their gods….'(7:138)
Conditions for permissibility in seeking refuge in something created
- Must be a type of refuge the creation is capable of
- Heart must be turned to Allah
- Must know the creation is only a means
Important parts of seeking refuge
1) Seeking protection from an evil
2) Turning the heart and turning the matter over to the object of refuge
Ruling on *Completely* seeking refuge in something created and its evidence
Major Shirk

Evidence: § "And verily there were men among mankind who took shelter with the males among the jinn, but they (jinn) increase them (mankind) in sin and transgression" (72:6)
Virtues of Tawheed
1) It is the right of Allah

“O Mu`âdh! Do you know what is Allah’s right over His servants and what their right is over Him?”..[it] is that they worship Him without associating any partner with Him in worship.."

2) The reason why the Messengers were sent

"And verily, We have sent among every Ummah a Messenger (saying): Worship Allah, and avoid At-Taghoot (all false deities)" (16:36)

3) Guarantees the slave Jannah

"Those who believe and do not mix their belief with any Dhulm, for them there is security and they are guided ones" (6:82)
Dangers and Evils of Shirk
i. The Greatest Sin
1) 4:48, 116 Allah forgiveth not that partners should be set up with Him; but He forgiveth anything else, to whom He pleaseth;
ii. Reason for eternity in the Hell Fire
iii. Nullifies all good deeds

And indeed it has been revealed to you as it was to those before you: "If you join others in worship with Allâh, (then) surely (all) your deeds will be in vain, and you will certainly be among the losers." (39:65)

iv. Forbids Paradise
The meaning of the shahadah
{La M'abuda be Haqqin Illa Allah}

There is no object of worship deserving of worship except Allah
