Retorperitoneal space
Area between the posterior portion of the parietal peritomeum and the posterior abdominal wall muscles.
What is secreted by adrenal cortex?
Steroid hormones: Mineralocorticoids, Glucocorticoids, Sex hormones.
What is secreted by adrenal medulla?
Epinephrine, norepinephrine.they are amines refered to as catecholamines, they elevate blood pressure, vasoconstrictor.
Mineralocorticoids
Regulate electrolyte metabolism, Aldosterone. controls PH.
Glucocorticoids
Carbohydrate metabolism: Promote deposition of liver glycogen, inhibit use of glucose by cells.
Cortisone and hydrocortisone diminish allergic response, inflammation.
Sex hormones
Androgens and estrogen.
Adrenal tumors in woman can promote secondary masculine characteristics.
Adrenal cortex controlled by?
Adenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) from the petuitary.
Low glucocorticoid blood concentration stimulates the secretion of ACTH.
Increase in adrenal cortex activity inhibits further ACTH secretion.
Addison's disease.
Hypofunction of adrenal cortex.
Symptoms include hypotention, weakness, loss of appetite and weight, bronzing skin.
Cushing;s disease
Oversecretion of acortisole due to overproduction of ACTH from pituitary tumor or tumor in cortex itself.
Symptoms include increased sodium retention, edema, increased plasma volume, mild alkalosis. Muscle and bone weakness, secretion of androgen increases causing masculizing effect in woman.
Pheochromocytoma
Tumor of adrenal medulla that secretes eoinepphrine and norepinephrine in excessive quantities.
Clinical: Hypertention
Sono: Homogenious tumorm weak posterior wall, poor through transmission, may be large, bulky.
Adrenal neuroblastoma
Most common malignancy of adrenal gland in childhood and infancy, Arise from adrenal medulla. asymptomatic.
Sono: echogenic mass, may be large.
Conn's disease.
Caused by adrenal adenoma. adrenal glands produce too much aldosterone, causes hypertention.lower the level of the mineral potassium in blood.
