Used to determine a hosts MAC address from its IP address. This utility is also used to view and make changes to IP address to MAC address translation tables.
Address Resolution Protocol (ARP)
Security and account database used by default on Novell Netware 3.X servers and available to Netware 4.x, 5.x and 6.x servers.
Bindery
A special network address that refers to all users on the network. in a TCP/IP network it would be 255.255.255.255. Any packet sent to this address will be sent to everyone on that LAN.
Broadcast Address
The new routing method used by interNIC to assign IP addresses. Can be described as "slash x" networks, with x representing the number of bits in the network that InterNIC controls.
Classless Inter-Domain Routing (CIDR)
A protocol and system for mapping IP addresses to user friendly names. It resolves host names to IP addresses, and vice versa (with reverse lookups.)
Domain Name Service (DNS)
A dependable flexible alternative to manual TCP/IP configuration that provides PCs with automatic configuration of the three necessary TCP/IP parameters: IP Addresses, subnet mask and default gateway.
Dynamic Host configuration Protocol (DHCP)
A protocol designed primarily for transferring data across a network. FTP denotes both a protocol and a utility used for this purpose. It was created to quickly and efficiently transfer data files from one host to another without impacting the remote hosts' resources.
FTP: File Transfer Protocol
The name of a host computer that uses both the host name (workstation name) and the domain name.
Fully-Qualified Domain Name (FQDN)
The protocol used for communication between a web server and a web browser.
HTTP
the secure version of the protocol used for communication between a web server and a web browser.
HTTPS
An alternative to POP3, it retrieves email from an email server like POP3. Uses TCP/IP port 143
IMAP4
Enables systems on a TCP/IP network to share status and error information. Two of the most common uses of ICMP messages are ping and tracert.
Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP)
Protocol suite developed by Novell, primarily for supporting Novell NetWare based networks.
IPX/SPX: (Internet package exchange/sequence Packet exchange)
The address that is either assigned toa network card or burned in the NIC. this is how PC's keep track of one another on a local metwork and keep each other separate.
MAC Address
The process of translating or resolving logica host names to a network address
Name resolution
