Body Cavities
internal chambers where vital organs are stored with two essential funcitons:
1. they protect delicate organs from accidental shocks, and cushion them from the thumps and bumps of movement
2. they permit significant changes in the size and shape of internal organs so activites of nearby organs are not disturbed.
Ventral Body Cavity
contains organs of respiratory, cardivascular, digestive, urinary, and reproductive systems
Diaphragm
a flat, muscular sheet that divides the ventral cavity into the superior thoratic cavity and inferior abdominopelvic cavity
Thoratic Cavity
Bounded by the chest wall, upper cavity of the ventral body cavity, subdivided into right pleural cavity, mediastinum, and left pleural cavity and also contains the pericardial cavity
Abdominopelvic Cavity
enclosed by the abdominal wall and by the bones and muscles of the pelvis, lower portion of vantral body cavity divided into peritoneal cavity, and includes the abdominal cavity, and pelvic cavity
Viscera
internal organs that are partially or completely enclosed by these cavities
Serous Membrane
a delicate layer that lines the walls of these internal cavities and covers the surfaces of the enclosed viscera
Visceral Layer
a portion of serous membrane that covers a visceral organ
Parietal Layer
the opposing layer that lines the inner surface of the body wall or chamber
Pleural cavities
Subdivisions of the thoratic cavity that contain the lungs
Mediastinum
subdivision of the thoratic cavity that contains the trachea, esophagus, and major vessels
Pleura
serous membrane that lines the pleural cavity
Pericardial cavity
contained within the mediastinum, a small chamber that surrounds the heart
Pericardium
serous membrane that lines the pericardial cavity
Peritoneal Cavity
contained within the abdominopelvic cavity, includes the abdominal cavity and pelvic cavity
Abdominal cavity
included in the peritoneal cavity and contains the liver, stomach, spleen, small intestine, and most of the large intestine
Pelvic cavity
included in the peritoneal cavity and contains urinary bladder, reproductive organs, last portion of digestive track
Peritoneum
Serous membrane that lines the peritoneal cavity
