Extrapolation
the use of a regression line or curve for prediction outside the domain of values of the explanatory varible x that you used to obtain the line or curve......(using a curve to predict data that would not fit)
Lurking Variable
a variable that has an important effect on a study, but is not included in the variables studied.
Does association ALWAYS imply causation?
NO! an association between two variables may be strong, but doesn not necessarily mena it is the cause... ie increase ice cream sales and increase of drowning.
Confounding
when we are unsure whether a variable has an effect on the response. There may be more than one variable that could possibly be the cause.
Cautions for interpreting correlation and regression
Correlation and regression should be interpreted with caution
wathc out ofr the effects of extreme observations
correlation and regression describe only linear relations
avoid extrapolation
Two-way table
dextribes the relationhiop between two categorical variables
simpons paradox
a comparision between two variables that holds for each individul value of a third variable can be chan ged or even reversed when the data for all values of the third variable are combined
