18 Cards in this Set

Sebaceous Glands
oil glands found all over skin except palms of hands & soles of feet; lubricant to keep skin soft & moist
Apocrine Glands
found in the axillary & genital areas; secrete milky protein and fat rich substances
Eccrine Glands
found all over body especially on palms of hands, soles of feet, & forehead; important role of maintaining body temperature
Two Sweat Glands
Eccrine & Apocrine
Reticular Layer
deepest skin layer of the dermis; contains pacinian corpuscles
Pacinian Corpuscles
pressure receptors located in the reticular layer
Papillary Layer
superficial dermal region composed of areolar connective tissue; the pain (free nerve endings) & Meissner's Corpuscles are found here
Meissner's Corpuscles
touch receptors found in the papillary layer of the dermis
Stratum Basale (Basal Layer)
deepest epidermal layer attached to the dermis; single row of youngest keratinocytes; single row of stem cells that undergo rapid division (stratum germinativum)
Stratum Spinosum (Prickly Layer)
superficial to basal layer; weblike system bundles of intermediate filaments made of pre-keratin protein; Melanin Granules & Langerhans' cells abundant
Stratum Granulosum (Granular Layer)
thin; 3-5 cell layers where changes in keratinocyte appearance occurs with keratinization; cells begin to die
2 types: Lamellated Granules- waterproofing glycolipid to make cells more resistant to destruction. Keratohyaline Granules- accumulate forming keratin
Stratum Lucidum (Clear Layer)
thin, transparent band superficial to Stratum Granulosum; 2-3 rows of dead keratinocytes
Stratum Corneum (Cornified/Horny Layer)
outermost layer of epidermis and accounts for the bulk of the epidermal thickness; dead keratinocytes; protect against abrasion & penetration, glycolipid waterproofs layer
Keratinocytes
most abundant epidermal cell; produce keratin (fibrous protein gives epidermis durability & protective capabilities)
Melanocytes
spidery black cells that produce melanin; protects deeper epidermis from UV light
Langerhans (Dendritic) Cells
epidermal cells; immunity
Merkel (Tactile) Cells
in conjunction with sensory nerve endings form touch receptors located at epidermal-dermal junction
Epidermis, Dermis, Hypodermis
outermost layer composed of epithelium
underlying 2nd major skin region; strong, flexible connective tissue
subcutaneous tissue; not part of skin; adipose tissue
