Explain blood flow through the nephron

blood enters afferent arteriole, is delivered to the capillary tuft called the GLOMERULUS (filtration apparatus), big molecules/cells such as proteins, white blood cells, and red blood cell that are too big to get filter exit through the EFFERENT ARTERIOLE, smaller molecules go to the Peritubuluar capillaries or PCT, to the nephron loop, and then to the DCT or Distal convulated tubule

What is filtrate?

What is it made of?

a liquid that has passed through a filtrate or stuff that gets squeezed out of glomerulus; small ions, small molecules like glucose, amino acids, etc.

what does fenestrated mean?

has lots of holes

what type of cell lines the vessels of the nephron?

epithelial cells (fenestrated)

What is the function of the kidneys?

1. excrete waste

2. maintain water

3. hormone

What is the functional unit of the kidney?

the nephron

What is the section of the renal tubule where the majority of reabsorption of glucose takes place?

PCT-Proximal convoluted tubule

What does the renal tubule consist of?

It consists of three parts:

1. PCT-proximal convoluted tubule

2. nephron loop

3. DCT-Distal Convoluted tubule

What is the section of the renal tubule primarily responsible for establishing the high salt concentration in the interstitial fluid of the renal medulla called?

Nephron loop

What line the glomerulus?

podocytes

Which structure of the kidney is supported by podocytes so that structural damage from elevated pressure and high filtration rates can be avoided?

Glomerulus

Dilation or constriction of this vessel is primarily responsible for regulating the rate of filtration:

afferent arteriole

Where is the site of fertilization?

the uterine tubes, otherwise called the fallopian tubes

What structure in the male reproductive system produces pre-ejaculate, which lubricates the male urethra and neutralizes residual urine?

the Bulbourethral gland

where is mature sperm stored in the male reproductive system?

epididymis

what is the female gonad called?

ovary

Where the site of oocyte development?

ovaries

what is an oocyte?

female egg

What is the name of the capsule of the glomerulus?

Bowman's capsule

??? Anatomy of small intestine

what is bile made of and what is it's purpose?

What is pancreatic juice made of and what is it's purpose?

What cells produce testosterone?

the interstitial cells surrounding the seminiferous tubules

What affects secondary sex characteristics in males?

Testosterone

Where are sperm produced?

inside the seminiferous tubules of the the testes

Where do developing sperm move?

to the epididymis within the testacular fluid and then are stored primarily in the tail of the epididymis.
