Anti-Federalists

Those who opposed the constitution -- did NOT want a strong federal government

Articles of Confederation

Original "constitution" -- gave all power to the states, had no executive or judicial branches

Bicameral

having 2 houses of legislature

punishment without a judicial trial (protected by the constitution)

Checks and balances

features of the constitution that limit the power of government by making each branch obtain the consent of others for its actions -- Madison's idea to set power against power to constrain government actions.

Connecticut compromise

Combined Virginia plan (representation based on population) and NJ plan (each state is equal) by creating a bicameral legislature where each idea was present in one house -- intended to maximize equality but gave smaller states more power
