Columbian Exchange
The Columbian Exchange was the commingling of Old and New World plants and ecosystems, animals, diseases, and social patterns that occurred as a result of Columbus's voyage to the New World in 1492. European crops such as wheat, barley, rice, and turnips reached the New World, while corn, potatoes, tobacco, coffee, and cocoa were introduced into Europe, changing European agriculture. The exchange of the native flora and fauna of the Old and New World, changed entire ecosystems. Precious metals and gold and silver mines that originated in the New World also made their way to Europe. Cattle, horses, sheep, pigs, and livestock were introduced into the New World. European diseases such as smallpox, measles, chickenpox, influenza, malaria, diphtheria, yellow fever, typhus, and whooping cough were transported to the New World, while syphilis made its way to Europe from the New World.
Conquistador
