Bills Of Exchange

The Bills of Exchange Act 1882 is a United Kingdom Act of Parliament concerning bills of exchange. The Act was drafted by Sir Mackenzie Chalmers, who later drafted the Sale of Goods Act 1893 and the Marine Insurance Act 1906.

Castile

Charles V

Hapsburg ruler of Spain from 1516-56. Elected Holy Roman Emperor in 1519. He defended the Hapsburg lands from the Ottomans and decided to split the Hapsburg Spanish and Holy Roman lands between his son, Philip II, and his brother, Ferdinand I.

Philip II

Son of Charles V and a devout Catholic, he was the Hapsburg ruler of Spain from 1556-98. He led the Spanish Counter-Reformation but failed to invade Protestant England with his Spanish Armada.

Battle of Lepanto

Spain assembled large fleets to fend off Ottoman forces but could not go at it forever. So, on 1571, both sides declared the Battle of Lepanto. The slightly outnumbered Spanish ships won against the Ottomans and this specific event ended Ottoman expansion into Europe.

Henry Tudor (VII)

1st tudor king of england, brought England from War of Roses, uprooted nobility, ministers in middle class, Star Chamber, used marriage in foreign affairs

Star Chamber

Court used to deal with public infractions of the peace made by Henry VII. Decorated with stars, no jury, popular at first criticized later.

Justices of the Peace

England: Since England had no army or professional civil service bureaucracy, the Tudors relied on the support of these unpaid officials. The justices of the peace were influential landowners and handled the work of the local government by punishing criminals, enforcing laws, etc.

daughter of Isabella and Ferdinand of Spain. Married to King Henry VIII. Did not produce a male heir. Divorced. Produced daughter Mary

Edward VI

king henry viii's only son. sickly, and became king at 9 years old. since he wasn't capable of governing his country the protestant church was soon brought in through his advisors cromwell and cranmer.

The Act of Supremacy

proclaimed king henry viii the supreme leader of the church of england, which meant that the pope was no longer recognized as having any authority within the country, and all matters of faith, ecclesiastical appointment, and maintenance of ecclesiastical properties were in the hands of the king.

Virginia Company

Originally created Jamestown with the goal of finding silver and gold. Used a headright system to get more people and forced labor into the colony. Also created an elected assembly. Surrendered its charter in 1624 making Virginia the first royal colony.

(1566-79) Caused for religious reasons; Protestant Region in Northern Spanish Netherlands/Dutch Republic; they revolted against Spanish authority for political and religious independence from Spain

(1701-1713) war over the successor of Charles II "the sufferer"; Charles had selected Philip V Bourbon, his grand-nephew and Louis XIV's grandson to succeed him, going against a previous agreement that he would be succeeded by an Austrian; an alliance of European powers with troops led by Eugene, Prince of Savoy, and John Churchill fought against French and Spanish troops; the war ended with the Peace of Utrecht

William II

Ruler of the Netherlands who led a revolt for independence against Hapsburg Philip II of Spain.

King James I

John Pym

A Parliamentary leader of the opposition to the throne. He led Parliament in refusing to give funds to the king until he gave into their grievances.
