BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The 80 years war also known as the Dutch Revolt, started in 1568 and ended in 1648. Philip II was the king of Spain and known as the most Catholic King. Philips’s greatest misfortunes came with his attempt to crush the revolt in the Netherlands, because of Netherlands location, it was open to the religious influences.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

One of the richest part of Philip’s kingdom was Spanish Netherlands, was also the most important. Philip II wanted to strengthen his control in the Netherlands, regardless of the traditional privileges of the separate provinces. But, the Netherlands was filled with Calvinism which Philip II tried to put an end to, because he was Catholic.

Netherlands also realize that their paid taxes were being used for Spanish interest, but the major catalyst for the rebellion was due to Philip II trying to crush Calvinism. Violence Started in 1566 when, Calvinists, especially nobles began to destroy statues and stained glass windows of Catholic churches.

The Netherlands consisted of seventeen provinces (modern Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg). The seven northern provinces were largely Germanic is culture and Dutch-speaking, while the French- and Flemish speaking southern provinces were closely tied to France

The 80 years war started in 1568 due the to the Netherlands provinces rebelling. They rebelled mainly due to the fact that Charles II tried to crush the religion Calvinism, which the provinces didn’t like.

Another important event was in 1609, which is when the Twelve Years Treaty took place. Spain, France, and the Netherlands wanted to stop fighting for twelve years but, then the Spanish created a strong army called the Armada and the Dutch realized this and didn’t let them be in the war and created alliances and started winning.

Another important even is the when the Treaty of Munster happened. The Treaty of Munster happened in 1648, so the ending of the war. The price of war gradually began to outweigh the potential gains. This was true for Spain and for the Republic. The independence of the Netherlands was finally recognized by the Treaty of Munster which was signed on the 30 January 1648.
