Allegory

A narration or description usually restricted to a single meaning. Represents specific abstractions or ideas. They have few personal qualities beyond their abstract meanings.

Allusion

A reference to a person, place, thing, event, or idea in history or literature (and more!) that enriches an author's work.

Aside

In drama, a speech directed to the audience that supposedly is not audible to the other characters onstage at the time.

Blank Verse

Unrhymed iambic pentameter. Closest to the natural rhythms of English speech.

Catharsis

Release of the emotions of pity and fear by the audience at the end of a tragedy. Frightening reminder of human limitations and frailties. Affirmation of human values rather than a despairing denial of them.

Classical

Refers to works of ancient Greek or Roman literature. Exhibit author restraint, unity of design and purpose, clarity, logical organization, and respect for tradition.

Comic Relief

A humorous scene or incident that alleviates tension in an otherwise serious work. Thematic significance.

Electra Complex

The female version of the Oedipus complex.

Foil

A character in a work whose behavior and values contrast (or underscore) those of another character in order to highlight the distinctive termperament of that character. Speaks twice.
