Dignified elements of government
Unelected, weild rather little power. Includes the House of Lords and the monarchy. They remain in existance because they are respected by the British populace. The House of Lords can initiate and delay legislation.
Efficient elements of government
Elected, hold almost all of the UK's actual power.
• SMDP, two-party
Includes the House of Common and PM (Prime Minister).
Shadow Cabinet
Leadership of major party out of power. Serves as a watchdog for current administration.
Backbencher
MP (member of Parliament) who does not hold a cabinet position
When are elections for the PM held?
Within a 5 year period of taking office. Such may be conducted sooner, whenever the PM feels that he is in good favour with the public, so increase his chances of winning.
Collective Responsibility
Once a policy is passed, members of the cabinet must promote it, even if they were opposed to it.
Free Vote
Vote on a bill in which party disipline is not enforced, usually on "matters on conscience."
Social issues
Not an area of concern in British politics. Capital punishment is banned, gun control promoted, and openly gay politicians are common.
Margaret Thatcher
Held office from 1979-1990 with the Conservative party. Believed that Britian had become overly socialist and unproductive, and that such was the fault of both parties.
