Axial skeleton

Consists of skull, hyoid, vertebral column, thoracic cage, spinal cord

Frontal

1 bone. Forms forehead, has frontal sinus mucus cavity

Parietal

2 bones. Forms sides and roof of cranium

Temporal

2 bones. Forms lateral wall of cranium and part of cranial floor. Has zygotmatic, mastoid and styloid processes, external auditory canal, mandibular fossa

Occipital

1 bone. Forms posterior and inferior surfaces of cranium. Has occipital condyles, foramen magnum

Ethmoid

1 bone. Forms inner surface of cranial floor, medial orbit walls, nasal roof, superior nasal septum. Has cribiform plate, crista gali, Nasal conchae, perpendicular plate, ethmoid sinus

Sphenoid

2 bone. Keystone of cranial floor, cross brace, looks like wings, forms some of orbit. Has body, Sella turcica, greater wing and a sinus

Maxillary

2 bones. Forms bridge of nose, has a sinus and palatine process

Nasal

2 bones. Forms bridge of nose

Zygomatic

2 bones. Forms part of zygomatic arch and part of outer wall and floor of orbit

Mandible

1 bone. Lower jaw. Alveolar processes and has condyles

Lacrimal

Tiny bones that form the medial wall of orbit

Palatine

2 bones. Forms posterior part of hard palate and small part of orbit floor

Inferior nasal conchae

2 bones. Forms lower part of lateral nasal cavity, helps provide warming and humidification

Vomer

1 bone. Forms lower part of nasal septum

Fontanelles

Large fibrous areas between cranial bones, only in infants

Hyoid

1 bone. Horseshoe shaped bone in neck between mandible and larynx. Supports tongue & is attachment site

Sternum

Contains manubrium, body, xiphoid process.

Thorax

Bony cage formed by sternum, costal cartilage, ribs, bodies of thoracic vertebrae
