In multicellular organism, one of many types of circulating chemical signals that are formed in specialized cells, travel on body fluids, and act on specific target cells to change their functioning

endocrine system

The internal system of chemical communication involving hormones, the ductless glands that secret hormones, and the molecular receptors on or target cells that respond to hormones functions in concert with the the nervous system to effect internal regulation and maintain homeostasis

endocrine glands

A ductless gland that secrets hormones directly into the interstitual fluid, from which they diffuse into the bloodstream

nuerosecretory cells

A specialized nerve cell that releases a hormone into the bloodstream in response to signals from other nerve cells; located in the hypothalamus and adrenal medulla

negative feedback

A primary mechanism of homeostasis, whereby a change in a physiological variable that is being monitored triggers a response that counteracts the initial fluctuation
