Acyclovir, Famciclovir, Valacyclovir

-Usually treated with oral and anti-viral therapy for 5-10 days.

-These drugs can shorten the acute episode if given within 24hr


- if >6 episodes per year, low dose of prophylactic is given.

Trifluridine, idoxuridine, oral acyclovir

-Most common cause of blindness


-S/S painful inflamed lesion on eye


-tx: local application of drops or ointment

Influenza

-S/S sore throat, sneezing, coughing, fever, chills


- Prevent with vaccination



Amantadine, Rimantadine

-used to prevent influenza or decrease severity of acute symptoms


-antivirals


-no longer recommended due to wide spread resistance.



Oseltamivir, Zanamivir

Treat active flu infection


-Need to be given within 48hr of onset


-Neuroaminidase Inhibitors


- shorten from 7 to 5 days




Relenza is given inhalation with effects of bronchitis, bronchospasms, and skin hypersensitivity.
