Proguanil
Clinical Uses: prophylactic and suppressive activity in sporozoite induced P.falciparum malaria; suppresses acute attacks of P.vivax malaria
Primaquine
Clinical Uses: used to treat latent forms (hypnozoiticidal) of P.vivax and P.ovale to prevent relapse; prophylaxis - active against exo-erythrotic schizonts; gametocytocidal for all malarial parasites;
CI: patients with G6PD deficiency, may cause acute intravascular hemolysis
Chloroquine
Clinical Uses: TOC for P.vivax, P.ovale, P.malariae, and uncomplicated P.falciparum malaria;
SAFE in PREGNANCY!
Quinine/Quinidine
Clinical Uses: treatment of severe illness due to chloroquine-resistant strains of P.falciparum; gametocytocidal for P.vivax and P.malariae;
AE: cinchonism, hypoglycemia, hypotension, thrombocytopenia;
CI: PREGNANCY
Pyrimethamine + Sulfadioxine
Clinical Uses: prophylaxis of mildly chloroquine-resistant P.falciparum malaria; used in combo with Quinine in the treatment of uncomplicated, multi-resistant P.falciparum malaria;
SAFE in PREGNANCY!
Metronidazole
Clinical Uses: used to treat ANAEROBIC bacteria; amebiasis, trichomoniasis, giardiasis, dracunculiasis; hepatic abscesses and other extra hepatic amebic infections;
AE: nausea, headache, metallic aftertaste;
CI: alcohol use should be avoided
Nifurtimox
Clinical Uses: acute Chaga's disease;
AE: nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, insomnia, seizures, polyneuritis;
CI: should be avoided in early pregnancy
Sodium Stilbogluconate
Clinical Uses: leishmaniasis and KALA AZAR
