Imperialism
refers to a policy of extending rule of a nation or empire over foreign nations and of taking and holding foreign colonies.
Colonialism
refers to the political, social, economic, and cultural domination of a territory and its people by a foreign power for an extended period of time.
Development of the Global Economy: Post WWII
The collapse of European colonial empires, New technologies, Development of information and communications technology.
Globalization
the ongoing spread of goods, people, information, and capital around the world.
Positive consequences of Globalization
increase in life expectancy and literacy, less warfare in some areas because they have been pacified, and an increase in the middle class.
Negative consequences of Globalization
include many societies losing their culture and way of life.

Ethnic group
refers to a particularly defined group.
Origin myths
the collective history of an ethnic group that defines which subgroups are part of it and its relationship to other ethnic groups.
Ethnic boundary markers
any overt characteristics that can be used to indicate ethnic group membership (clothing, food, language, etc.).
nationality
is an ethnic group with a separate political identity.
subnationality
has only a social identity (e.g. Irish Americans, Mexican Americans).
Homeland
the geographical area, defined by history, which in their beliefs collectively and exclusively belongs to the members of that nationality.
Ethnic cleansing
is the deliberate and systematic attempt by the dominant ethnic group to eliminate a rival ethnic group or groups within a geographical region.
The three main types of ethnic cleansing are:
Sociocide, Genocide, Relocation
Sociocide
Destroying the ethnic identity of a people for the purpose of assimilating the group into the dominant society (e.g. Native American boarding schools).
Genocide
The deliberate and systematic attempt to physically destroy the unwanted ethnic population (e.g. Nazis, Bosnia).
Relocation
The forced resettlement of an unwanted ethnic group in a new geographical location (e.g. Native American removal).

are depending on others for their economic well-being.
