Pg. 174 How many spouses? Know some of the challenges to each type of marriage

There are four logical possibilities;

1. Monogamy, in which every individual is allowed only one spouse.

2. Polygyny, in which one man is allowed multiple wives.

3. Polyandry, in which one woman is allowed multiple husbands.

4. Group Marriage, in which several women and men are allowed to be married simultaneously to one another.

Pg. 176 Globalization topic. Explain why young Japanese women are choosing to remain single and childless

There are many reasons;

japanese women do not want to marry the eldest son--- farm men, because the work is hard and they have to live with the husbands parents, and there is not much money in the farm business.

In the 90's women began to postpone marriage until their 30's or not marry at all thus not having children these women are called parasite singles, because they live with their parents even though they make good money they rather spend the money on themselves.

Companies get rid of women when they have children, so if they do not marry they do not have children and keep their well paying jobs.

Pg. 181 Bride wealth, bride service, dowry. Know the definitions an any ways that we (USA) might practice similar ideas.

Bride wealth- Custom in which a prospective groom and his relatives are required to transfer good to the relatives of the bride to validate the marriage.

Bride Service- Custom in which a man spends a period of time working for the family of his wife.

Dowry- Custom in which the family of a woman transfers property or wealth to her and/or her husband's family upon her marriage.

Gender stratification pg. 257 to the end of the chapter

The degree to which males and females are unequal in dimensions such as status, power or influence, access to valued resources, eligibility for social positions, and ability to make decisions about their own lives.

Gender stratification is multidimensional which makes it difficult to categorize from high to nonexistent.

Pg. 306, 307 American secular ideologies that contribute to stratification.

One ideology is that the whole nation benefits from inequality. Because a few people are very wealthy, many citizens believe that the lower and middle class are better off than if wealth was distributed more evenly. The chance to get rich motivates people.

A second secular ideology is that the elite earn their rewards through their own merit and efforts. They are more intelligent, ambitious, hard working, willing to take risks, and so forth. In short the elite have personal qualities that account for their success and the rest do not.

Pg. 204 Aging nations and caring for the elderly in Japan

It seems that regardless of how and where Japanese son's and daughter's work and live there is a strong obligation to take care of their elderly parents who brought them into the world and who sacrificed so much for their upbringing and education.

Pg. 240 Evolution. psychology and sexual double standards.

Evolutionary Psychology explains human social patterns in terms of biological evolution.

There are widespread sexual double standards between men ad women in society. Men expect their wives to be faithful, but there is a huge percentage that are not. Evolution built in one kind of sexual strategy for males so because of their genetic heredity males act one way and females act another.

Men want heir wives to be faithful, but they do not think they have to follow the same standards.

Chapter 35 C and C know the chapter

Understand it

Explain how stratification of gender works in the USA

Gender stratification haas always been an issue in the US, starting in the 1900's women slowly started to find equality. Women have always been stratified in their schooling, working, and in politics. The past 20 years more equality has started but there is still a large gap in the work place and especially politics. Women are still looked down on even in this politically correct environment in which we live in now. Until the genetics of "old time thinking" has evolved out of men there will always be different standards in which men think women should live by.

Explain how stratification based on racial lines works in the USA

Racial stratification is alive and well in the US and is genetically part of how Americans think. The white rich people believe that minorities are less than and through social upbringing and cultural teaching it is believed that we are not created equally and that the white race is more dominate.
