What is anthropology?

Study of humanity.

What do anthropologists mean by the term "holism"?

Anthropologists study human societies as systematic sums of their parts as integrated wholes.

What is culture?

Human beliefs and behaviors of a society that are learned, transmitted from one generation to the next,and shared by a group of people.

What is worldview?

The way in which a society perceives and interprets it's reality.

What is a myth?

A sacred story that provides the basis for religious beliefs and practices.

What is cultural relativism and how is it different than ethnocentrism?

Cultural relativism is analyzing cultures other than one's own w/out judging them in terms of one's own culture. It's different than ethnocentrism because it's analyzing culture thru one's own culture.

What functions does religion serve?

Durkheim proposed: it provides social cohesiveness to help maintain social solidarity through shared rituals and beliefs, social control to enforce, religious-based morals and norms to help maintain conformity and control in society.

What is a symbol?

Shared understandings about the meaning of words or items.

What is a ritual?

A patterned, recurring sequence of behaviours.

What is an altered state of consciousness?

Any mental state that differs from a normal mental state.

Not normal walking state.recognizable by individual or others. Vary in intensity. Common occurrence.

Why is "ASC" important in religious rituals? Loop

These emotions range from fear and anxiety to a generalized feeling of well being to a profound entity such as a spirit or a god. These experiences ans emotions make up an important element.

How is a shaman different than a priest?

Shamans are called(often dream or trance) initiation-enter into and control ASC. Respected, feared, and suspicious.
