Why did the earls submit to William

He had control of the royal treasurery in Winchester.

Reasons for rebelions

William raised the geld tax.

Odo and William siezed land unlawfully and mistreated the women.


Morcars earldome was reduced in size and Edwin lost his promise of marriage to Williams daughter.

Maintaing Norman power

1) Norman propaganda was used to show William had been Edward's rightful successor


2) William held ceremonies 3 times a year where he was seen wearing his crown to remind the public that he intended to remain and to gain his popularity as it showed he cared about being king of the country


3) coinage featured his face as propaganda


4) William hold oath taking ceremonies where landholders would swear their allegiance to the king

Revolt of the earls

Roger de Breteuil (son of FitzOsborn) : earl of Hereford, Ralph de Gael : earl of East Anglia, and Waltheof : earl of Northumbria

Rogers motives

He resented William for reducing the size of the earldom he inherited from his father and probably saw it as an insult and mockery to him and his family as his father had been one of Williams most trusted followers. William had also take away some privillages of the Marcher earldoms, the sheriff now had to answer to the king instead of the earl so William had more influence and control over his earldoms.

Ralph

He had similar reasons as Roger and married Roger's sister in 1075

Waltheof

Was the last Anglo Saxon earl and was pardoned by William in 1069 after the previous revolts. Resented William for loss of Anglo Saxon power and thought he would have support from other Anglo Saxons.

Powerful allies

Ralph and Waltheof contacted King Sweyn of the Danes and his son Cnut put together a large fleet. The earls also had support from Williams enemies in France.

Loss of Anglo Saxon power

Anglo Saxon earls had been very powerful, but under William, they lost a lot of power and rights

Importance of the church

1) the church helped control society by praising the king and teaching the people about their role in society.
