Downsides of Living in Roman Cities.

1 people lived in horrible conditions.Crowded.2. Noise and congestion.


a.People spent a lot of time outside on the streets, workshops and stores wereopen to the streets. Construction. People voted and lived outside. Peoplescreamed advertisement to the crowds.


b. Thestreets were tiny, most were no more than 6 feet wide. 6 to 20 feet.


3. Buildings were badly built. Fires.


4. Streets were dirty with human waist, animals.


5. no street number or names. People got lost a lot.


6. no light at night.


7. Street are dangerous at night.


8. Massive amounts of air pollution. a.coal, wood burning, dried stuff, dust.

How people lived.

1. Insulae- apartmentcomplexes. 4 to 5 stories high. But they were often poorly built.


2. Romans relied a lot from the ancient equivalent of Fastfood. Since they didn’t have a proper place to cook.


3. Minimal amount of light.


4. No running water. Dependent on a fountain.


5. Bathrooms. If lucky you had a communal latreen.


6. almost not furniture even for the wealthy. a. bed. Low tables benches or stools.

Clothing

Men. Cloth, cloakor for the rich a tunic. Women. Sameas the men. Sandals and no socks. Jewelry. Lots of Jewelry.

Wealthy people houses.

Better built – not that much though. Either square orrectangular. In the middle there was an atriums. With fountains plants andstuff. Outside of the house was just a wall with door. Windows only in thecourtyards. Not many rooms. Bedrooms around the courtyard. A dinning room.Everyone eat laying down. Maybe at the front there was an office. At the backthe kitchen with store rooms. Minimal furniture. Weathy homes did have art.Marbles, wall paintings, sculpture. Usually they had theyr own latreenconnecting with the sewers.

Pompeii&Herculaneum.

In august 24 79 AD. Vesuvius destroyed Pompeii andHerculaneum. Time capsule. Everything stayed the same as if nothing hadhappened.

Herculaneum had pool and stuff.Theaters, houses of prostitution, and other fun stuff. Grafitties on walls about people insulting each other.

Amenities of living in the city.

Roman Army

-The typicalsoldier were vouleenter, a free soldier, and to get into a legion one need tobe a citizen, later teen, no younger than 16, early 20s. If he is not a citizen, he can be part of the Navy andsomething else.


How to get into legion

If you are in a legion one can expect to be there 20 yearsand in a auxileries one was there for 25.To get into a legion you needed a recommendation letter,from a father a patron or anything. To get into the legion, one needed know had to read, writeand know a little of arithmetic. Then you had an interview with a guy, and he will make surehe that you are a citizen and if he was physically capable to do it. There wasa sort of physical that we know nothing about. To get into the legion one had to be at least 5 foot tall. Fisherman and weaverswere not acceptable to the army. Depending on your parents career you might ofnot even had a chance to apply. If you made cart andshoes you would easily entered.Slaves are not acceptable of the army. If you get accepted you get assigned to a Unit.

Roman Basic Training

- They were taught how to march and they had tomarch at least 3 miles


- Running, jumping and swimming. -


-Carry heavy stuff and get on a horse back withall the stuff by jumping.


-Weapons training. Wood. Swords. Throw spear andhit something with it.

Soldiers needed to be strong.

-Soldiers were likely to carry alance. A shield.A sword. Things to build with. An axe, A saw,Abucket and a basket, Acooking pot, since food was distributed raw. Soupy stuff, A bowl Carry 3days food supply, olive oil, wine, dried meat, dries fruit. They had to carry 50 pound or more,If youhad special skills.

Special army units

1. Math and engineering, good with numbers, youwere probably sent to do special stuff.



Money

thecost of their clothing and food was deducted from their paycheck, the cost of anew sword also. They loved unannounced bonuses.

Legion

isthe largest unit in the army 6,000 men. It was divided into groups. The mainforce of the legion was the men on foot, the infantry. Calvary,Artillery, Infantry (the ones to fight),Immunes, blacksmiths, doctors kind of, people who take care of animals.

Headquaterstaff

it is lead by the commanding officer, who were sometimes theemperor.

Aguiles

Agent of the emperor when the emperor cant leade theheadquarters, usually a senator or equites. Military tribunes replace the Aligues if they could notlead. The tribunes were very young, with no experience.

A prefect.

hemakes sure thing s get done. That a legion kept record, personal, what pay,what legion, century or cohort he is part of. This paper work is done so thatwe can know when they can retire. Pay records, kindda like the treasurer, payedon coins gold silver or wateves. The money was in a chest. He makes sure thearmy gets all the supplies the army needs.

Immunes

people who know how to build roads, bridges, camps or forts,selecting a camp site that are appropriate.

Calvary

was not used much in battle but in looking for enemies.

Cohort

480men. The first cohort was double. 480 is a lot so then it is divided intocenturies.

Centuries

are80 men. Lead by a Sergeant the Centurian.

Artillery

Theydid the engineer work, they build fences and weapons. They made the catapult.

The Infantry

Theywore a long shirt with long sleeves called shift. With a cloak or a tunic.Usually they wore sandals, but in cold weather they wrapped the sandals withgarments. The helmet that might protect you next, might.

Celts

The people that the Romans traded tin with. The Celts lived in rural societies. Therewere obviously social classes, the nobility, the bards and the druds.

Bards

poetsand signers. The poems were song. The music went along with poetry.

Druds

theywere their priest. They also acted as juged. The romans did not like them,because they preformed human sacrifices.
Caratacus
Theresisance of some of the tribes was lead by this guys, but he lost. He ran away to another tribe where theleader was a women.
Cartimandua

Shehanded Caratacus handed him over to the Romans. But Claudious pardon Caratacus.men.

Boudicca

The widow of the king of iceny. She was striped and wipedher daughter ere raped. And she started a rebellion. She escaped after she was finaly defeated by rome.
Camvlodunum
- amilitary town of rome, it was captured by the brits lead by Boudicca, ahse alsobeat their army. The romans had to give up the base in London. And they burnedthem both down. They did not take prisoners. They killed them. Later on thequeen get taken care of cus the tribes were not able to agree. By 65 AD.

70sAD

the romans controlled most of what is England. 77 and 78 AD.Agricula pushed north until Scotland and west until part of wales.

Hadrian’s Wall.

3thousand men in Hadrian’s wall. 90 miles of wall that went through England.Every mile there were lookouts. Raiders had problems getting in and out. Havingthis wall cuts the number of men in the region, instead of 2 legions justhaving 3 thousand men.
