Where is Egypt located?
Northeast Africa
Along the Nile River
Southeast of Mediterranean Sea
How did it begin?
Well it been 8,000 years ago when the Ice Age Ended. From there, North Africa had fertile land. The lakes, rivers, and abundant wildlife filled up the area. At that time the climate was changing, hot places now cooler the, cold places now were hotter then.
Many people migrated to the Nile because of its abundant source. This was about the time of 5,100 years ago. That is when the Egyptian civilization began!
How was the life in early Egypt?
- small communities began to grow near the Nile.
-These people who lived near the Nile were called "nomes"
Did each Nome have a ruler? What later happened to the nomes?
Yes, each nome had a ruler.
-well the nomes began to unite which later devoloped a Kingdom.
When the nomes united and formed a kingdom what were the two kingdoms called?
Upper and Lower Egypt
Did the Egyptian fight a war? If so what was the conflict and the aftermath?
It was about 5,100 years ago.
- King Narmer ruled Upper Egypt.
-Upper Egypt won

- he did this because s that the lower Egypt people wont get mad because they lost
2.wore a red and white crown on his head
- this symbolized the two nation or kingdom Egypt had

And so this helped unify the two nations permanently
What was the Egyptian Religion like?
- this religion guided every aspect of the Egyptian life.
- Ancient Egyptians wer called Polytheistic which means "Many gods"
- many gods were represented in a animal form.

1. Amun-Rae

Who was Amun-Rae?
- The sun god.
- which means that he was pictured as holding the sun through the sky on a boat.
Who was Osiris?
-The god of the afterlife.
- ruled over the souls of the dead and was pictured as being wrapped in bandages.

When Osiris became ruler or a god his brother Seth was jealous of Osiris because he got all the fame. He hated Isis. so when Seth got mad he took it out on Osiris and killed him put him into little pieces and threw them in the Nile. Isis then took those pieces and put them back together and wrapped bandages on him.
Who was Isis?
- the gods (Osiris) wife
- was pictured in a form of a bird
- also known to protect mothers and wifes
Who was Anubis?
- the god of the dead
- was pictured to be a jackel
(jackel is almost like a dog.)
Who was Thoth?
- god of the wisdom and scribes
- was pictured with the head of a ibis
Who was Maat?
- the goddesses of the order and stability
- wore a feather on the top of the head

The feather of truth determined whether you shall or shall not go to the afterlife. So they weigh your heart and put the feather of truth on the scale. And so if your heart weighs less than the feather of truth. And if it was heaver then you will be eaten by a sourus which was an animal with the head of a crocodile and the back of a hippopotamus.
Who was Hourous?
- Son of Osiris and Isis

Belief: the king of Egypt was Hourous in human form
What was the Egyptian government like?
- Egyptian government was a manarchy which mean ruled by kings.
- each king ruled for life until died.
What happened when a king died?
-Egyptian belief: King became Osiris
- the oldest son then became the new king this was to keep power to one family
- A family that wanted the family to hold power for a long time was once called a dynasty, they wanted there dynasty to last.
What are Hieroglyphics?
Hieroglyphics are symbols that Egyptians used as a form of writing.
- it was almost as old as the cuneiform writing, which later developed to a alphabet
- only scribes could read and write in hieroglyphics.
What were the other types of writing that had developed during the time.
There were 2 other writing formats that developed in the hieroglyphics:
1. Demotic; simple and easy to learn
2. Hieratic; which was used mainly by religious leaders
How did the Egyptians writing become lost?
Two things:
1. about 2,000 years ago Egypt became a part of the Roman Empire
2. Over the next 500 years there was a less and less of a need to know the hieroglyphic language.
How was the Hieroglyphic language re-discovered?
It was lost for over 1,300 years ago but it was discovered by:

1. in 1798 the French army invaded Egypt
2. some french soldiers discovered an odd stone which had writing in Hieroglyphic, Demotic, and Greek.

All three languages said the same thing which then made it easier for people to translate.
What was the discovery of the odd stone?
The Rosetta Stone
