1. China’s land area is about 6.5% of total land in the world, ranking #3 in world
2. Natural barriers (made China hard to get to by outsiders)= South China Sea, Taklimakan Desert, Plateau of Tibet, Himalayas, Gobi Desert, Mongolian Plateau
3. China’s geography made China’s civilization isolated from other civilizations in India and further west, having its own unique culture, giving them a strong identity and sense of superiority

Chinese Dynastic Cycle
From the beginning of Chinese history-1900’s CE, a succession of dynasties (sequence of rulers considered members of the same family) ruled China, some lasting for a few years and some lasting for centuries, ALL going through the DYNASTIC CYCLE

1st stage:
• An individual leader gained control of China by defeating military rivals in war, gaining the hereditary right to rule within the leader’s family, and a new dynasty emerged (became known)

2nd stage:
• A general period of internal peace, expansion and great power
• The new dynasty collected taxes and labor services from the people and used its influence/power to improve roads/irrigation, to support education and arts, and to build palaces to enhance (improve) prestige (status)

3rd stage:
• Involved a period of decline
• The rulers thought less of the people and more about living in luxury raising taxes, creating hardships among the people
• Govt stopped maintaining roads and irrigation systems
