Big Bang Theory
A theory of how the universe was created. All matter and energy was contained, but 14 billion years ago, it went outward in all directions.
Red Shift
Evidence that universe is still expanding. The more things in space get farther away and the wave length is stretched out, they look red.
Galaxy
A collection of stars, dust and gas bound together by gravity.
Nuclear Fusion
The process by which nuclei of small atoms combine to make and release energy.
Milky Way
Galaxy containing our solar system.
Solar System
The sun and all of the planets and other bodies that travel around it.
Light Year
The distance that light travels in one year.
Planetesimal
A small body from which planet originated in the early stages of development of the solar system.
Prominence
A loop of relatively cool, incandescent gas that extends above the photosphere and above the sun's edge as seen from Earth.
Solar Nebula
A rotating cloud of gas and dust from which the sun and planets formed; also any nebula from which stars and exoplanets may form
Solar Flare
An explosive release of energy that comes from the sun and that interrupts communication on Earth
Corona
Outer part of Sun, can only be seen in Solar Eclipses
Sunspot
Cooler parts on the sun; occurs in cycles
Supernova
Explosion of a star, due to collapsing under gravity; star grows in size and gets brighter
Photosphere
Visible part of the sun
Black Hole
Made after the death of a star, when gravity is so strong light cannot escape
Aurorae
Charged solar particles that are being guided along the Earth's magnetic field
Neutron Star
An extremely dense, compact star composed primarily of neutrons, especially the collapsed core of a supernova
Red Giant
A star in an intermediate stage of evolution, characterized by a large volume, low surface temperature
Main Sequence Star
What our Sun is; normally yellow and bright
White Dwarf
A star that has undergone gravitational collapse and is in the final stage of a stars life
