Ocular lens

Removable eyepieces used to observe the microscope slide

Objective lenses

The 3 or 4 lenses that are mounted on the revolving nosepiece

Stage

The flat platform located beneath the objective lenses where the slides are placed

Mechanical stage

Holds the slide securely in place with a spring clamp for viewing.

Base

The wide bottom part that supports the microscope

Arm

The straight or curved vertical part that connects the base to the head

Head

The upper part of the microscope that extends from the arm and contains the ocular lenses and the rotating nosepiece with the objective lenses

Substage light

The light source is usually built into the base of the microscope and typically has a dial or sliding bar on one side to control the light intensity

Iris diaphragm

Located beneath the condenser. Changes diameter and regulates the amount of light that passes through the condenser

Condenser

Located just below the stage is a lens that condenses light through the specimen on the slide above .

Coarse focus knobs

On each side of the microscope towards the base is a large knob.


Moves the stage up and down


Used for scanning or low level

Fine focus knob

The smaller knob on each side of the microscope that's used for precision focusing

Micrometer


Used to measure the field of view and objective size
