What is an example of a first line defensive mechanism? |
External barriers |
What are some examples of second line defense mechanisms? |
- Phagocytic cells - Antimicrobial proteins - Immune resistance - Inflammation - Fever |
What is an example of third line defense mechanisms? |
- Specific Immunity |
What is an example of mechanical protection? |
- Kertanized cells of epidermis - Regular shedding of outer layers |
What is an example of chemical protection? |
- Sebum from sebaceous glands - Acid Mantle - pH (3-5) - Defensins - Lactic acids |
What do mucous membranes do? |
External barriers which line body cavities open to outside. The mucous traps microbes and foreign substances. |
Where are mucous membranes found? |
- Repiratory - Digestive - Reproductive - Urinary |
What 3 fluids contain lysozyme? |
1. Tears 2. Salivia 3. Mucous |
What is lysozyme? |
A bacterial destroying enzyme. |
Acidic stomach destroys many pathogens that may get digested. |
Note |
Where do phagocytotic cells participate? |
- 2nd and 3rd lines of defense |
What are the major types of phagocytic cells? |
1. Neutrophils 2. Eosinophils 3. Basophils 4. Lymphocytes 5. Monocytes
What do neutrophils do? |
Destory bacteria through phagocytosis and respiratory burst? |
What do eosinophils do? |
Destroy parasites and allergens through the production of toxic proteins and secretion of anti histamine. |
What do basophils do? |
- Secrete histamine and heparin
What are lymphocytes known for? |
- Natural Killer (NK) cells |
What do monocytes do? |
- Transform into macrophages in tissue |
Macrophages have much more phagocytotic capacity than neutrophils. |
