What is in the Inferior Mediastinum?
Anterior - remnants of thymus, lymph nodes, fat, and CT

Middle - Heart, pericardium, roots of great vessels, arch of azygous vein, main bronchi

Posterior - esophagus, thoracic aorta, azygos and hemiazygos vein, thoracic duct, vagus nerves, sympathetic trunks, splanchnic nerves
Where does the superior mediastinum pass through?
inferiorly from superior thoracic aperture passing through sternal angle and IV disc of T4-T5 vertebra
What are the contents of the Anterior Mediastinum?
loose CT, fat, lympathic vessels, few lymph nodes, branches of internal thoracic vessels

in infants it contains the inferior part of the thymus
What are the contents of the superior mediastinum?
Thymus

brachiocephalic veins, superior part of SVC, arch of aorta (brachiocephalic trunk, L common carotid A, L subclavian A)

Vagus and Phrenic N

Cardiac plexus of N

Left recurrent laryngeal N

Trachea

Esophagus

Thoracic Duct
What happens at Transverse THoracic Plane?
plane passing through angle of Louse at junction of T4-T5

Ascending Aorta ends

Arch of Aorta begins and ends

Descending Aorta begins

Trachea bifurcates to right and left pulmonary bronchi
What are the nerves in the Superior Mediastinum?
Right Vagus:
-enters thorax anterior to R subclavian --> R recurrent laryngeal N
-R recurrent laryngeal ascends between trachea and esophagus to supply laynx
-then passes posterior to R brachiocephalic V, SVC, and root of right lung
branches --> pulmonary plexus
single nerve --> esophageal plexus
contributes to --> cardiac plexus

Left Vagus:
-contributes to posterior root of left lung --> pulmonary and cardiac plexuses
-joins R vagus --> esophageal plexus
What does the Phrenic Nerve supply?
diaphragm

pleura, pericardium, and peritoneum
