Lateral boundary of the Orbit

Lateral Wall by

1) Frontal process of Zygomatic Bone

2) Greater Wing of Sphenoid

Roof boundary of the orbit

Roof by

1) Orbital plate of Frontal bone

2) Lesser wing of Sphenoid bone

Medial boundary of the orbit

Medial wall by

1) Maxilla

2) Lacrimal bone

3) Ethmoid bone

4) Body of the Sphenoid

Floor boundary of the orbit

Floor by:

1) Orbital process of palatine

2) Maxilla (orbital surface)

3) Zygomatic bone

Contents of the orbit

1) Eyeball

2) Orbital and Bulbar fascia

3) Muscles

4) Vessels

5) Nerves

6) Lacrimal Gland

7) Fat

Two groups of muscles of the eye

A) Voluntary

B) Involuntary

Voluntary Muscles of the Eye

(7 muscles in each eye)

A) Four recti

1) Superior, 2) Inferior, 3) Lateral, 4) Medial

B) Two Oblique

1) Superior Oblique, 2) Inferior Oblique

C) One levator

1) Lavetor Palpebrae superioris

Extra Ocular Muscles of the eye

Four recti (Superior, Inferior, Lateral, Medial)

Two Oblique (Superior Oblique, Inferior Oblique)

Involuntary muscles of the eye

(3 muscles in each eye)

1) Superior Tarsal

2) Inferior Tarsal

3) Orbitalis

Vessels in the orbit

1) Opthalmic artery

2) Superior and Inferior Opthalmic Veins

3) Lymphatics

Nerves in the orbit

1) Optic

2) Occulomotor

3) Trochlea

4) Branches of opthalmic nerve

5) Abdjucent

6) Sympathetic nerve

Nerve supply of the muscles in the orbit

All striated OCULAR muscles are supplied by oculomotor nerve (3rd cranial nerve) except Lateral Rectus and Superior Oblique

Lateral rectus is supplied by abdjucent nerve (6th cranial) and superior oblique by trochlear (4th cranial nerve)

Effects of Occulomotor Nerve palsy

a) Ptosis / Drooping of upper eyelid due to paralysis of levator palpebrae superioris

b) External Strabismus (Squint) due to unopposed action of lateral rectus

c) Dilated and fixed pupil

d) Loss of accomodation

e) Protrusion of Eyeball due to flaccid paralysis of most ocular muscles

f) Diplopia

What is Exopthalmos?

Abnormal protrusion of the eye due to flaccid paralysis of most occular muscle
