Thoracolumbar fascia
deep fascia of the back in the thoracic, lumbar and sacral regions, continuous with the deep fascia of cervical and gluteal regions, thickens inferiorly prominently in the lumbar region, trilaminar, all layers unite laterally and attache to the angle of the ribs
Posterior layer of thoracolumbar fascia
attaches medially to the spinous processes of the thoracic and lumbar vertebrae and median sacral crest, area of origin for latissimus dorsi from about T7 to sacrum
Middler later of thoracolumbar fascia
attaches medially to the transverse processes of lumbar vertebrae, artificially divide back from posterior ab wall
anterior layer of thoracolumbar fascia
attaches medially to transverse processes of the thoracic and lumbar vertebrae
Splenius group
broad and flat, lie deep to the trapezius and deep and medial to the levator scapulae. two muscles in this group, splenius capitus and splenius cervicis
Splenius capitus
most superior of group
origin: spinous processes of C7-T4 and lower half portion of the ligamentum nuchae insertion: lateral third of the superior nachal line (occipital bone) and the mastoid process |
splenius cervicis
most inferior of group
origin: spinous processes of T2-T6 insertion: transverse processes of C1-C3 |
Function of Splenius group
extensors of the head and neck when contracting bilaterally and rotators of the head and neck when contraction is unilateral
Erector Spinae Muscles
largest group of the intrinsic back muscles, deep to posterior layer of the thoracolumbar fascia, sometimes called intermediate group of deep back muscles. lie between spinous processes of vertebrae medially and angle of ribs laterally
Erector Spinae Muscle fibers span
6-10 vertebral levels and all orignate from a broad common tendon attached to the spinous processes of lumbar, lower thoracic, sacrum and iliac crest region. Iliocostalis, longissimus, spinalis
Iliocostalis
most lateral of all erector spinae muscles and inserts to the angle of ribs and transverse processes of cervical vertebrae
iliocostalis lumborum
most inferior of group
origin: common ligament of the erector spinae (sacrum/ilica crest level) insertion: superolaterally to the angle of ribs 6-12 |
iliocostalis thoracis
origin: is the angle of ribs 6-12
insertion: is angle of ribs 1-6 and transverse process of C& |
iliocostalis cervicis
most superior of the iliocostalis group
origin: angle of ribs 3-7 insertion: transverse processes of C4-c6 |
Logissimus
medial to iliocostalis and lateral to spinalis, attaches to tansverse processes of vertebrae and to ribs lateral to the tubercle (longest)
longissimus thoracis
most inferior
origin: common ligament of erector spinae and transverse processes of lumbar vertebrae insertion: transverse processes of thoracic vertebrae and ribs of 3-12 lateral to tubercle |
longissimus cervicis
origin: transverse processes of T1-T5
insertion: transverse processes of C2-C6 superiorly |
longissimus capitus
most superior of group
origin: transverse processes of C4-T4 insertion: mastoid process ( portion of the temporal bone of skull) |
spinalis
most medial or erector spinae muscles, attaches to the spinous processes of T3-T6 inferomedially and to transverse processes of C1-C3 superolaterally
Spinalis thoracis
most inferior
origin: spinous processes of T10-L2 insertion: spinous processes of T1-T8 |
Spinalis cervicis
origin: nuchal ligament and spinous process of c7
insertion: spinous process of c2 |
