What is the sclera?

The sclera is thewhite ofthe eye –a toughfibrous coat that protects the inner eye and gives it shape

What is the cornea?

The cornea is aprotective cover over the lens, contains “aqueous humor” inthe anterior chamber, refracts light rays to focus them onto the retina

What is the choroid?

The choroid isdarkbrown pigmented membrane that lines the sclera; lots of blood supply to nourishthe retina; pigmented to absorb light rays

What is the ciliary body?

The ciliary body extendsfrom the retina to the base of the iris; contains muscles that alter the shapeof the lens for focusing; secretes the aqueous humor

What is the iris?

The iris is thecoloured part of the eye; a muscular diaphragm that alters the size of thepupil

What muscles change the size of the pupil?

The pupil changesinsize depending on the contraction of antagonistic muscles(circularand radial muscles)

What is the retina?

–Linesthe posterior of the eyeball, contains the “vitreous humor”

–Madeup of nervous tissue and a pigmented layer, involved in image formation

–Thenervous tissue ends in a jagged border near the ciliary body called the oraserrata

–Thepigmented layer continues over the ciliary body and the iris (ciliaryportion of eye)

What is the macula lutea?

The macula lutea isthesmall area at the opticcentre ofthe retina

What is the fovea?

The fovea is the small depression in the center of the macula, with the highest concentration of cones (photoreceptors)

What is the optic disc?

The optic disc is wherethe ganglion neurons bend posteriorly from the optic nerve (aka blind spot)

What is the posterior cavity?

•betweenthe lens and retina

–Filledwith vitreous humour (jelly-likeliquid)

–Thiscreates pressure to prevent the eyeball from collapsing and tohold theretina against the choroid

–Ifthe retina comes away from the choroid, this is called a detachedretina
