Anterior

Nearer to or at the front of the body.

Ex. The toes are located anterior to the heel.

Posterior
Nearer to or at the back of the body.

Ex. The heel is posterior to the toes

Medial

Nearer to the midline or the body of a structure.

Ex. The nose is medial to the eyes.

Superior

Toward the head or upper part of a structure; generally refers to structures in the trunk.

Ex. The Ribcage is superior to the pelvis.

Inferior

Away from the head or toward the lower part of the structure; generally refers to the trunk. Ex. The stomach is inferior to the heart.
Lateral
Farther from the midline of the body or a structure. Ex. The ears are lateral to the eyes.
Ipsilateral
On the same side of the body.

Ex. The liver and appendix are ipsilateral.

Contralateral

On the opposite side of the body.

Ex. The stomach and liver are contralateral.

Proximal

Nearer to the point of attachment of an extremity, to the trunk or a structure; nearer to the point of origin.

Ex. The elbow is proximal to the wrist.

Distal

Farther from the point of attachment of an extremity, to the trunk or a structure; farther from the point of origin.

Ex. The ankle is distal to the knee

Superficial

Toward or on the surface of the body.

Ex. The placement of the scalp is superficial to the skull.

Deep

Away from the surface of the body.

Ex. The brain is deep to the skull.

Parietal
Pertaining to the inner wall of a body cavity as opposed to its contents.

Ex. The parietal membrane lines the walls of the thoracic cavity.

Visceral

Pertaining to the covering of an organ


ex. the visceral membrane covers the lungs

Dorsal

Relating to the back of the body or to the posterior of an organ.


ex. the spine is located on the dorsal aspect of the body.

Ventral

Relating to the front of the body or to the anterior part of an organ.


The nose is on the ventral aspect of the body

Coronal

A lengthwise plane which runs side to side and divides the body into anterior and posterior sections. Also called a frontal plane.

Transverse

Transverse A crosswise plane which divides the body or any of its parts into upper and lower portions. Also called horizontal plane.

Sagittal

A lengthwise plane running from front to the back. It divides the body into right and left sides. If the plane is exactly in the middle, it is called a midsagittal plane.
