What is a bone made of ?

Bones are composed of several different tissues working together...

- Osseous Tissue

- Cartilage

- Dense Connective Tissue

- Epithelium

- Adipose Tissue

- Nervous Tissue

Are their other aspects of bone that make up the Skeletal System?

All of the bones and their cartilages, along with ligaments, and tendons, constitute the skeletal system.

What are the functions of the Skeletal System?

-Protects the most important internal organs (Brain and spine)

- Assists in movement

- Osseous Tissue stores and releases minerals, particularly calcium and phosphorus.

-Red marrow within the bone produces Red Blood Cells.

- Yellow marrow within the bone stores triglycerides(fat), a source of potential energy.

What is calcium good for?

-Building strong bones.

-Helping the Nervous System and muscles.

- Contracting muscle

- Thinking

Describe a long bone.

- Greater in length rather than width.

- They have long attachment areas (broad)

(Humerus)

Describe the short bone.

Nearly equal in length and width.

(Carpal bone)

Describe a flat bone.

- Thin & Flat

(Sternum)

Describe an Irregular bone.

- Complex shapes

(Vertebra)

Describe a Sesamoid bone.

- Shaped like a sesame seed.

- Developed in body after one is born.

- Housed within tendons and formed because of use. (Ballerina foot)

- "Extra bones"

Regions of the long bone and their location.

-Diaphysis: The shaft.

-Medullary cavity: Yellow fat inside the shaft.

-2 Epiphysis: Proximal & Distal.

-2 Metaphyses: Join diaphysis and epiphysis with epiphyseal plate, or line once growth stops.

What are the Surface tissues ?

Endosteum: INSIDE

Periosteum: OUTSIDE

They coat the bone.

Example: When your running and get a shin splint, you tear the endosteum off the bone.

What are the Perforating (Sharpey) Fibers?

Fibers that penetrate into the matrix.
