Lymph




fluid in the tissue spaces that carries protein molecules and other substances back to the blood




lymphatic vessels

( Permit only one-way movement of lymph)



1. lymphatic capillaries- tiny blind-ended tubes distributed in tissue spaces

Right lymphatic duct




Drains lymph fromt he right upper extremity and right side of head, neck, and upper torso




Thoracic duct

Lymph nodes

1. filter lymph



2. located in clusters along the pathway of lymphatic vessels

4. Lymph nodes and other lymphoid organs have functions that include defense and WBC formation

Thymus

1. lymphoid tissue organ located in mediastnium



2. total weight of 35 to 40 grams- a little more than an ounce



3. Plays a vital and central role in immunity



4. produces T lymphocytes, or T cells



5. Secretes hormones call thymosins, which influence T-cell development



6. Lymphoid tissue is replaced by fat ( during childhood) in the process called involution




Tonsils

1. Composed of three masses of lymphoid tissue around the openings of the mouth and throat


a. pa;atine tonsils


b. Pharyngeal tonsils (adenoids)


c. lingual tonsils



2. Subject to chronic infection



3. Enlargment of pharyngeal tonsils may impair breathing




Spleen

1. largest lymphoid organ in the body



2. located in upper left quadrent of abdomen



3. Often injured by trauma to abdomen



4. surgical removal called splenectomy



5. Functions include phagocytosis of bacteria and old RBC's; acts as a blood reservoir
