Superior
Above another part, or closer to the head.
Inferior
Below another part, or toward the feet.
Anterior
Towards the front.
Posterior
Towards the back; opposite of anterior.
Medial
Imaginary midline dividing the body into equal right and left halves.
Lateral
Toward the side with respect to the imaginary midline.
Bilateral
Refers to paired structures, one on each side (Lungs are bilateral)
Ipsilateral
Structures on the same side. (The right lung and the right kidney are ipsilateral)
Contralateral
Structures on the opposite side. (Patient with a fractured leg would have to bear weight on the contralateral-left-lower limb.)
Proximal
Describes a part closer to the trunk of the body or closer to another specified point of reference than another part. (The elbow is proximal to the wrist)
Distal
Opposite of proximal. It means a particular body part is farther from the trunk or farther from another specified point of reference than another part. (The fingers are distal to the wrist)
Superficial
Near the surface.(The epidermis is the superfical layer of skin).
Peripheral
Outward or near the surface. It describes the location of certain blood vessels and nerves.
Deep
Describes more internal parts. (The dermis is the deep layer of the skin.)
Sagittal
Refers to the length wise cut that divides the body into right and left portions.
Transverse
Horizontal cut. Divides the body into superior and inferior portions.
Frontal (Coronal)
Section that divides the body into anterior and posterior portions.
Epigastric Region
The upper middle portion
Midsagittal
Sagittal cut passing along the midline.
Parasagittal
Saggital section lateral to midline.
Left/Right Hypochondriac regions
on the left/right side of the epigastric region
Umbilical Region
The central portion
Left/Right Lumbar Regions
On the left/right side of the umbilical region

The lower middle portion
