Lines of reference to where the body is divided.

Sagittal Plane

Medsagittal (plane the divides the body into equal right and left planes).

Frontal Plane

Coronal Plane dividing the body into front and back parts.

Transverse Plane

Horizontal plane dividing the body into upper and lower parts

Superior

Closer to the head or higher up in the body than another structure.

Inferior

Closer to the feet or lower in the body than another structure.

Anterior

More in front of another part.

Posterior

More in the back than another part.

Medial

Closer to the mid-line.

Lateral

Away from the mid-line.

Distal

Further away from the root of the limb.

Proximal

Closer to the root of the limb.

Superficial

Closer to the spinal column.

Towards the back.

Lying face down.

Pertaining to one side of the body.

Bending a joint decreasing the angel of the two bones.

Extension

Straightening a joint increasing the angel between two bones.

Hyperextension

Excessive extension parts at joint beyond the atomic positions.

Adduction

Moving towards the mid-line.

Abduction

Moving away from the mid-line.

Prontaion

Turning the arm or foot downwards.

Supination

Turning the arm or foot upwards.

Retraction

Moving a part backwards.

Protraction

Moving a part forwards.

Elevation

Rasing a part.

Depression

Lowering a part.

Rotation

Turning on a single axis.

Circumduction

Circular movement of the hip or shoulder.

External Rotation

Rotation of your shoulder and hip away from the mid-line.

Internal Rotation

Side bending left or right.
