Anaerobic infections

Gram + bacillus
-cause of tetanus, botulism, and clostridial myonecrosis
-most common cause of infectious diarrhea of hospital pts (C. difficile)
-produce spores that can survive in aerobic conditions until they are inoculated into an anaerobic environment
Actinomyces
Gram + bacillus
-occasional normal flora of respiratory and female genital tract
-chronic draining infections with sinus tracts
Propionibacterium acnes
Gram + bacillus
-causes acne
Peptostreptococci
Gram + cocci
-normal in upper respiratory tract
-brain abscesses
-polymicrobial lung abscesses that develop following aspiration pneumonia
