2) Clostridium, Actinomyces, Proprionbacterium |
Gram - Anaerobes:
1)cocci 2) bacilli |
1) no important pathogens
2) Bacteroides, Porphyromonas, Prevotella, Fusobacterium -inhabitants of upper respiratory, GI, and female genital tracts -occasionally produce infections in these locations (lung abscess, peritonitis, PID) |
Anaerobic infections
-polymicrobial infections that smell really bad
-manifest as abcesses -puncture wounds (tetanus, gas gangrene/clostridial myonecrosis) -diffuse infections of lungs, meninges, etc are difficult because anaerobic conditions can't prevail |
Clostridium
Gram + bacillus
-cause of tetanus, botulism, and clostridial myonecrosis -most common cause of infectious diarrhea of hospital pts (C. difficile) -produce spores that can survive in aerobic conditions until they are inoculated into an anaerobic environment |
Actinomyces
Gram + bacillus
-occasional normal flora of respiratory and female genital tract -chronic draining infections with sinus tracts |
Propionibacterium acnes
Gram + bacillus
-causes acne |
Peptostreptococci
Gram + cocci
-normal in upper respiratory tract -brain abscesses -polymicrobial lung abscesses that develop following aspiration pneumonia |
