Hadassah
Hadassah is an organization formed by Henrietta Szold. Its main focus was Zionism, both providing health care to people in Palestine and helping women in America to develop themselves spiritually and intellectually. It was different than other organizations because it included not only the upper class, but also new immigrants, and it wanted to help Palestine build up itself.
Emma Lazurus
She is considered the poet laureate of the Jewish awakening and her poem, "the New Collusus" is on the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty. She was caught up in the sense of activism at the time, working with the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society and embodying the virtues of new womanhood which included piety, but also organization.
Penina Moise
She was from Charleston and wrote poems and songs about Judaism. She was well known for her poems, and although, she isn't a feminist in today's sense, she was pushing the boundaries of the role of women by putting herself in a public space.
Triangle Shirtwaist Fire
In 1911, 145 women died in a fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory because the owner locked the doors so that the women could not leave on breaks. Because so many women died, this event created a bigger push to attain rights for workers.
Uprising of 20,000
At the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, the owners wanted to press workers to work for longer hours and less money. These workers staged a walk out which led to a larger uprising, mostly of young people. There was much violence and the issues were never really resolved; however, it is an example of the growing power of unions and socialism, especially among younger people. (Clara Lemlich)
Female Hebrew Benevolent Society
It was founded by Rebecca Gratz and was responsible for the sick and burial services. It represents a transition from the benevolent societies of europe (chevra kaddisha). Also, it represents a way from women to be a part of the public sphere but also maintain the piety and purity expected of women.
Ashkenazic
Jews originating from Germany. After the Civil War, when Jewish religious practice was dwindling, ashkenazic immigrants helped to build the congregation.
National Council of Jewish Women
Founded in 1893 by Hannah Greenbaum Solomon at the World Parliament of Relgions in Chicago. Solomon had to choose whether to have it as part of Parliament of Religions or part of the women's house? Don't use this one.
symbolic consumption
It means that the consumption of products is a way to define culture. For Jewish women, products were a way to shape an American identity. For example, Gitl buying a hat with feathers or Mashah buying her own toothbrush.
Molly Goldberg
Character in a television and radio show created by Gertrude Berg which ran from the 1920s to the mid 1960. While it did have a woman in a position of domesticity, Molly was a modern woman and held power in the house. While she had care and concern for her children, she was different than the flat image of the Jewish mother who was controlling and overprotective.
