olive branch petition
- a petition adopted by the continental congress as resort to not fully go to war with great Britain, it affirmed American loyalty to prevent further conflict but was rejected

-act passed on 1775 was measure of retaliation by great Britain against the American rebellion, became know as American revolutionary war which applied a blockade on American ports
common sense
- a pamphlet that Thomas Paine wrote which explain some of the reasons the colonies were against great Britain and an argument of why they should be given independence

-A British Genenral best known for his involvement in the American Independence in the early days. He tried to take over Boston but failed and was replaced by General Howe in October 1775

-German regiments hired by the British empire to fight in the American revolution. The most significant role they played was in the Battle of Trenton. Many of these Hessians would desert the British and fight for Americans because they were promised land

women during war time
-Woman would stay back and did the farm work or run businesses some even followed men to war. Many woman became poor and would lead protest against high taxes. Some woman would dress up like man in order to fight.

-Wife of John Adams she gave political advice to John Adams. He went on to tell him that he shouldn't leave to much power in the hands of the husbands
civic virtue
-Cultivation of habits of personal living re said to be important for the success of a community. In order for the new government to be successful property owners should live under civic virtue.
ordinance of 1784
-Proposal by Jefferson that divided the western territory into ten self governing districts. Each state would be able to petition Congress for statehood.
northwest ordinance
-this created one single Northwest territory rather instead of the ten had before. It sated its population had to be at least 60000 people in order to declare a statehood. This statehood could be divided fro 3 to 5 territories
shay's rebellion
-A rebellion that lasted from 1786 to 1787 that was lead by Daniel Shay. The rebellion happened due to the farmers anger towards crushing taxes and debt.
